We may all feel let down by the thought of another early morning workday, especially after a great weekend. But some careers seem to cause more depression than others. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) surveyed 67,500 adults aged 18 to 64 over the last three years to determine the most and least depressing careers. Personal care and service workers, ranging from child caregivers to beauty salon technicians, reported a depression rate of nearly 11 percent. On the low end, engineers and architects reported depression rates of just over 4 percent. Lower incomes, part-time hours, and the younger ages of people in personal care and service work are thought to be the main contributing factors.
